The Bitter Truth about Chocolate

Red Valentine’s Day, red blood.

Faces flushed with happiness, faces flushed with stress.

Eyes sparkling with joy, eyes sparkling with tears.

Hands full of melting chocolate, hands full of calluses.

Gifts, handed out with love and affection

Who knew milk chocolate could also be bittersweet?

We eat, drink and dream of chocolate.

They eat, drink and dream of cocoa.

We, slaves of our hunger for chocolate,

Them of their hunger.

Hershey’s, M&M, Mars, Snickers

Plantations, machetes, tiny hands.

While our hands grab slabs and bars of chocolate.

All that’s left in theirs are dark chocolate dust.
